It wasn’t until 2020 that he was introduced to pickleball and quickly his affinity for the sport, turned into a newfound passion. Noticing that some of the best paddles were made from a polymer core and a carbon fiber surface – both materials which he was extremely familiar with due to the toy manufacturing and carbon composites, he decided to expand the business further into pickleball. Angel now competes at a 5.0+ level in pro-tournaments around the US. Tailwag Products partnered up with Pro-Pickle in 2023 to offer the high-quality carbon fiber paddle line to wholesale consumers and further, expand the development of additional pickleball items.

After a national parks road trip through Utah together with a pickleball buddy, visiting pickleball venues along the way, it was evident that Boulder was way behind in supporting the growth of pickleball. We currently have ZERO designated pickleball courts in our community of over 100,000 people. Our primary mission was to get Parks and Recreation to give the pickleball community designated courts. I am happy to report that they have already committed to the new construction of 16 courts over the next two years. This was accomplished as a result of hours of meetings with our City.
As marketing and social director with BOCO, I provide the secondary mission of programming and events for our members. We host weekly ladders, themed events, DUPR events, round robins and the like. Some of the challenges include acquisition of affordable court time, sorting members properly by skill levels, maintaining inclusivity and continuously acquiring new members.

I am attending the Picklecon looking to explore tools and techniques that will help us continue to plan top-quality pickleball events for our club, and to share with others the things we have learned along the way. Looking forward to sharing and networking in celebration of the awesome sport of pickleball!

Troy Akin is a current Professional Pickleball Player with a 6.3 DUPR and former top 50 PPA player. (currently #67). Troy played NCAA tennis before pickleball at Chapman University. After giving up meat and dairy for performance benefits (ie. Novak Djokovic), Troy quickly learned about the benefits of reducing and removing animal ag. for environmental benefits (75% less climate heating emissions, water pollution, and land use). Troy wanted to prove to the world he could win major pickleball matches on a plant based diet. After beating Connor Garnet and JW Johnson in singles (both top 5 at the time), Troy knew he had made the right decision. Troy loves pickleball, but also loves basketball, football, & baseball. Realizing how leather intensive these sports are and that leather is the most profitable part of the Animal pound for pound, Troy wanted to reduce the carbon footprint of sporting goods first by removing leather. Leather not only is cruel, but water and land intensive, not to mention the chemical run off from leather tanning and the Methane from cows. After seeing success with Eco Sports, Troy wondered how he could do the same in pickleball. Although pickleball does not use very much leather or any animal products, there is a ton of plastic being used. Especially at the pro level Troy could cycle through new paddles every couple weeks in order to play at peak performance. Carbon fiber will lose its grit due to the plastic ball and then is virtually indestructible and will never decompose. There is where flax fiber came into play for Eco Sports. The next evolution for Eco Sports is to use only bio based plastics for both the paddles and the balls. We are also in development with plant based leather like tomatoe leather for Baseball gloves and gym bags. There is a large shift in sustainability and pickleball, the biggest industries right now. Pickleball has an amazing opportunity to be at the fore front of this change.
